Academic pressure, career uncertainty, changing relationships, social media, financial concerns, loneliness and major life transitions can all influence well-being. In India, improving mental health literacy among young people, families, schools, colleges and communities is therefore an important part of building healthier support systems.

According to UNICEF India, approximately 10.6% of India’s population was estimated to experience some form of mental health condition, while 7.3% of young people aged 18–29 were reported to experience overall mental morbidity. UNICEF also cites the 2022 NCERT school-student survey, in which students reported experiences including anxiety, extreme emotions and mood swings. What must be noted here is that these figures come from different studies and years and should not be treated as a single prevalence estimate for all Indians. Now, let’s learn more about the concept of mental health.

What is Mental Health?

The World Health Organization describes mental health as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with life’s stresses, realise their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their communities. Mental health is therefore more than simply the absence of a mental disorder.

Mental health can change throughout life. A person may experience periods of good well-being as well as periods of stress, sadness, anxiety or emotional difficulty. Experiencing difficult emotions does not automatically mean that someone has a mental disorder.

Mental health is influenced by multiple factors. WHO identifies individual, family, community and structural factors as contributors that can either protect or undermine mental health. Factors such as emotional skills, genetics, substance use, poverty, violence, inequality and environmental conditions can influence mental well-being. Protective factors include supportive relationships, education, decent work, safe environments and strong community connections.

Also Read: List of Best Courses After 12th Biology & Career Options

Mental Health vs Mental Illness

Mental health and mental illness are related, but they are not interchangeable terms.

Mental Health

Mental Health Condition / Disorder

Refers broadly to mental and emotional well-being.

Refers to a clinically significant condition that may affect thoughts, emotions, behaviour or functioning.

Exists on a continuum and can change over time.

May involve persistent or significant symptoms requiring professional assessment.

Can be influenced by relationships, environment, lifestyle and social conditions.

Can arise through complex interactions of biological, psychological and social factors.

Everyone has mental health.

Not everyone has a diagnosable mental disorder.

Supporting mental well-being is relevant to everyone.

Professional assessment and treatment may be required depending on the condition.

Mental health conditions can involve significant distress, impaired functioning or other serious difficulties. Meaningful awareness involves being able to recognise that mental health is part of overall health, understand common misconceptions, identify when someone may need additional support and know how to access reliable information and professional care. Let’s understand each of these aspects in a detailed manner.

Understanding Mental Health

Mental health awareness begins with basic mental health literacy.

People should understand that:

Mental health is part of overall health.

Mental health difficulties can affect people of any age or background.

Experiencing stress or difficult emotions does not automatically mean someone has a mental disorder.

Mental health conditions are not signs of personal weakness.

Professional support can be appropriate and beneficial.

Mental health can be influenced by both personal and social circumstances.

Recognising Signs of Difficulty

Awareness can help people recognise meaningful changes in themselves or someone they care about.

These may include persistent changes in mood, sleep, appetite, behaviour, concentration, social interaction or everyday functioning.

However, awareness should not become self-diagnosis. Online checklists and social media posts cannot replace professional assessment.

Reducing Stigma

Stigma can make people reluctant to discuss their experiences or seek help.

Mental health awareness encourages respectful conversations and challenges stereotypes that portray mental health conditions as a character flaw, weakness or something that should simply be ignored.

Knowing When to Seek Support

An important part of awareness is knowing when everyday difficulties may require additional support.

If symptoms persist, become severe, interfere with studies or work, affect relationships or make daily functioning difficult, speaking with a qualified mental health professional can be an appropriate step.

Why is Mental Health Awareness Important?

Mental health awareness matters because knowledge can influence how individuals, families, educational institutions, workplaces and communities respond to mental health concerns. Let’s understand the importance of mental health awareness in a more comprehensive manner:

Aids in Early Recognition

Recognising concerning changes earlier can make it easier for someone to discuss what they are experiencing and explore appropriate support.

Reduces Stigma

Accurate information can challenge myths and stereotypes surrounding mental health conditions.

Encourages Help-Seeking

People may hesitate to seek support because they do not know where to go, worry about judgement or believe their concerns are not serious enough. Awareness can help make professional support a more familiar option.

Improves Mental Health Literacy

Mental health literacy includes understanding mental health, recognising concerns, knowing where to find reliable information and understanding when professional support may be appropriate.

It Supports Families and Friends

Awareness can help people respond with empathy rather than judgement when someone they know is experiencing difficulties.

Strengthens Education

Schools and colleges can help students develop emotional, social and help-seeking skills while creating environments where students feel comfortable asking for support.

Builds Healthier Workplaces

Mental health and work are closely connected. At the same time, the tools for change exist: evidence-based treatments, expanding digital and community platforms, progressive policy frameworks, and growing public willingness to talk.

For students at institutions such as K.R. Support peers with empathy. Advocate for better campus and community resources. When awareness moves from information to action—individual, institutional, and societal—India can steadily close the treatment gap and build a generation that treats mental health with the same seriousness as physical health.
